PADI Enriched Air Diver Course

PHRA NANG Divers - Krabi, Thailand.

You've flown halfway around the world, spent hundreds of dollars, and still have half a tank of air when the whale shark glides into view. Unfortunately you've spent your 27 minutes at 26 meters on the search and now that you've found the behemoth it's time for you to ascend leaving behind the enriched air nitrox divers who still have 23 minutes of bottom time left diving with 36% oxygen. Don't let this happen to you! Get longer, safer dives with enriched air nitrox. More time in the water!

DEPTH (metres)
AIR (mins.)
NITROX 32 (mins.)
NITROX 36 (mins.)
Comparison of the no decompression limits (NDLs) for air, nitrox 32 and nitrox 36.

All divers learn that as we dive our bodies absorb nitrogen, and we must ascend from our dives before an unsafe amount of nitrogen has been absorbed. Enriched air divers learn that by replacing some of the nitrogen we are breathing with additional oxygen we can extend our no decompression limits, the time we get to spend in the water.

A common misconception is that Nitrox is for deep diving. In fact, the biggest gains are realized on dives in the 20-30 meter range, exactly what we have here in Krabi.

The purpose of the PADI Enriched Air Diver specialty course is to familiarize divers with the procedures, safety protocols, hazards, risks, benefits and theory of no decompression diving with oxygen-enriched air containing 22% to 40% oxygen. The emphasis is on diving with Nitrox32 and Nitrox36. The course emphasizes the importance of proper procedures to ensure safety, and realistically balance the pros and cons of enriched air diving.

Knowledge development consists of watching the Enriched Air Diver video, reading the Enriched Air Diver Manual, completion of the knowledge reviews and an instructor led discussion/lecture. During a practical application session students get hands on experience using oxygen. By the end of knowledge development students must achieve 75% on a 50 question final exam.

Upon completion of all academic requirements students make two dives using Enriched Air. The emphasis is on the dive planning and there are no skills during the dives. Just more fun in the water!
